The Guilty Girl

About the book:-

Chloe is serving a life sentence. In her own home.

Ever since the horrific day her mother died, Chloe’s life has been anything but normal – more like a carefully constructed prison. Her father hasn’t let her go to school, have friends or leave the house alone.

As she grows up, Chloe begins to question the motives behind her dad’s obsessive control.

What would happen if she broke one of his many rules?

And what exactly is he hiding under the overgrown grass in the back garden?

When new neighbors arrive next door, they trigger a chain of events that causes Chloe to suspect her father’s motives are far darker than she knew.

Now she faces the terrifying consequences of defying the man who controls her every waking moment.

Will she risk everything to win her freedom or will her father’s dark secrets keep her captive forever?

My Review:-

This book has menace running right through it.  You can feel Chloe’s fear when she dares to break one of her father’s many rules.  I was feeling stressed for her as to what would happen if her father finds out.  Ruth Harrow draws the character of Chloe’s father beautifully and how conflicted Chloe is.  On the one hand he’s her father.  He’s all she’s got and he loves her and only wants what’s best for her.  He is protecting her.  Isn’t he?

I really enjoyed reading about Chloe’s excursions into the outside world and how bewildering she finds it and how little she knows about modern society.  And as Chloe’s carefully constructed prison comes tumbling down I was terrified with her about what might lie ahead.  How far would her father go to prevent the world discovering Chloe exists?

The end was fast paced, tense and completely unexpected.

About the author:-

Ruth Harrow was born and raised in England and graduated from university before embarking on an unfulfilling career in an office job. She eventually put pen to paper and her debut psychological thriller, In Her Footsteps, was published in 2018. It quickly became a bestseller. Following the success of her first novel, her second and third books followed shortly afterwards. She lives in the UK with her husband, two children and chocolate Labrador, Rolo.

My name is Charlie B and I have lived in the South of France for over 30 years with my husband Phil. At present we share our house with 6 cats (all rescue), our parrot Arthur (she's a girl) and our tank of tropical fish. I have always loved reading and belong to a writing group and a book club. So that I wouldn't feel so guilty sitting around and reading all day I decided to set up a book blog.
